Does medical payments coverage cover injuries suffered by passengers in a rideshare vehicle?

On Behalf of | May 19, 2021 | Automobile Accidents

Medical Payments Coverage, also known as Med Pay, is an optional coverage that California drivers can purchase to cover medical bills, lost wages and funeral expenses for covered persons injured in a motor vehicle accident, regardless of who is at fault for the accident.

Med Pay coverage applies when the insured person or their family suffers an injury while they are a passenger in a rideshare vehicle.

What does Med Pay cover?

Med Pay covers reasonable and customary expenses due to an injury to the policyholder or the policyholder’s family in a vehicle accident. The insurance company generally pays medical providers directly with no deductibles or co-pays. It covers expenses such as doctor’s bills, ambulance bills, physical therapy, hospital bills, x-rays, chiropractic treatment and medical equipment, up to the limits of the policy.

How does Med Pay apply when a rideshare driver is at fault for an accident?

A person who sustains one or more injuries as a passenger in a rideshare vehicle when the driver of that vehicle is at fault may still use Med Pay to cover medical bills and other covered expenses. However, Medical Payments Coverage does not cover pain and suffering or medical and other expenses that exceed the policy limits.

The passenger may still seek compensation from the rideshare driver’s insurance company for damages not covered by California Med Pay.
