Why you should go to the doctor after your accident

It was just a fender bender. You got the other person’s insurance information and called the people you’re supposed to. Now, you just want to go home and sleep it off.

It’s easy to just head out and want to put an accident behind you, but that may not ultimately be the best thing for you. There are three reasons that you should always go to the doctor after an accident, even if you think you feel fine.

The threat of soreness

You may think that you are just a little sore, but in a car accident that dull pain could be a sign of something bigger. Especially if you were rear-ended by another car, your soreness could be a symptom of whiplash. It can also mean that you may have a soft tissue injury or other types of strains.

Delayed symptoms

It’s also important to recognize that not all injuries from an accident show up right away. Some actually have delayed symptoms. If you are experiencing soreness, pain in your back, neck or shoulders, headaches, numbness, behavioral changes or abdominal pain, go to the doctor right away.

These could be symptoms of larger issues including brain injury, spinal injury, herniated discs or internal bleeding. You should also pay attention to the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder after your accident, including flashbacks, nightmares and anxiety.

Getting full compensation

To get compensated for injuries that you sustain during a car accident, you should go to a physician and get a diagnosis. They will be able to help you understand the pain that you are experiencing and identify any underlying injuries.

After you are in an accident, even a small one, you should go to the doctor. It’s important that you understand the full effect of an accident on your life to really fight for what you need.
